Mud Hens power past Clippers in first game
J.D. Martinez turned three first-pitch swings into three home runs today to lead the Toledo Mud Hens past the Clippers 8-1 in the first game of a doubleheader in Huntington Park.
Martinez victimized Columbus starter Tyler Cloyd (1-2) for a two-run homer in the first inning, a solo shot in the third and another two-run bomb in the fifth. All came on first-pitch offerings. Ezequiel Carrera also burned his former teammates with a three-run home off Cloyd in the second inning that landed on the south side of Nationwide Boulevard.
The Clippers scored just one run on a sacrifice fly by Matt Carson in the second inning. Duane Below (2-1) pitched the first five innings to earn the win.
The second game is scheduled to begin at about 5:35 p.m. with Toru Murata starting for Columbus against Mike Belfiore.
