Hartley senior shortstop Anna Kirk will sign a letter of intent to play softball for Ohio State on Nov. 14, according to coach Meghan Zuercher.
Last season, Kirk hit .609 with nine home runs, 34 RBI and 35 stolen bases and was the district Player of the Year in Division II. She also helped Hartley earn a district runner-up finish.
Look at those numbers for a second. I know that it's softball where many players hit at least .400 and the top players often hit .500, but that .609 seems magnified by the fact that she did this against extremely tough competition. The CCL always provides a tough battle, with DeSales winning the league at 6-0 last year followed by Hartley (4-2), Ready and Watterson (1-5 each).
Under Zuercher, who formerly played for Ready and at Ohio State when she also was known as Tommy Rowlands' little sister, the Hawks have developed into an area power in five seasons.
The Hawks should be pretty good again next spring, considering Sidney Melton, Cassie Plageman, Tiffany Wolf and Alexis Britford are others expected to be back.
Should be a fun few months for Kirk and the Hawks.
