New Albany High School senior Jalen Rhea signed a letter of intent Nov. 14 to play men’s basketball at American University in Washington, D.C.
Rhea, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound shooting guard, averaged 14.4 points and was named first-team all-OCC-Capital Division and honorable mention all-district last year for the Eagles, who were 12-9 overall and 10-4 in the league. Rhea made a school-record seven 3-pointers in an 81-44 win over Columbus West last Dec. 30.
Kyasia Duling and Hannah Scipio of the New Albany High School girls basketball team signed Nov. 14 to play for Duquesne University and the University of Akron, respectively.
Duling, a 6-foot-2 forward, averaged 11.2 points and 10.3 rebounds last year for the Eagles, who went 17-6 overall and 12-2 in the OCC-Capital Division. She was first-team all-league and honorable mention all-district.
Scipio will be a four-year starter at point guard for the Eagles. She averaged 13.3 points and 5.7 assists and had 92 steals — all team-highs — last season while being named first-team all-league, second-team all-district and honorable mention all-state.
Jack Carter of the New Albany High School boys golf team signed a letter of intent Nov. 15 to play at Iowa State University.
Carter, who averaged 73 per 18 holes this fall, shot 72 to share medalist honors with teammate Avery Schneider in the Division I sectional tournament Oct. 2 at The Players Club at Foxfire. Seven days later, Carter shot 78 at Apple Valley as the Eagles won the district championship. He then shot 163 in the state tournament Oct. 19 and 20 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course as New Albany placed fourth.
Haley McLellan of the New Albany High School girls swimming and diving team signed a letter of intent Nov. 15 to compete for the University of Cincinnati.
McLellan teamed with Taylor Berend, Elly Gleason and Stephanie Jones to qualify last season for the Division I state meet in the 200 (16th, 1 minute, 39.94 seconds) and 400 (22nd, 3:43.1) free relays. They were fifth (1:39.69) and seventh (3:40.66), respectively, in the district meet.
McLellan specializes in the butterfly and freestyle.
Three New Albany High School girls lacrosse players signed letters of intent Nov. 15 to compete in college.
Midfielder Morgan Fee signed with Ohio State, attacker Elaina Enich with Cincinnati and defender Rachael Yoho with Alma University, a Division III school in Alma, Mich.
Fee, who verbally committed to the Buckeyes before her sophomore season, had 50 goals and 21 assists last season for the Eagles, who lost 17-13 to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown in the Division II state championship game. Fee, who also scored 21 goals in 2010, was named second-team all-region and first-team all-state.
Enich scored 70 goals last year before sustaining a season-ending knee injury during an 18-3 victory over Cincinnati Indian Hill in the South/Central Region final May 24. She was second in scoring on the team behind Emily Richmond (85 goals) to earn first-team all-region and first-team all-state honors and also was named an honorable mention All-American by US Lacrosse.
