The Beat promised blogging in our recent print edition, so we went straight to the horse's mouth and asked Mike Clark, singer/bassist for The Smith Bros., to tell us about their Thursday, April 29, gig with Pat Dinizio of The Smithereeens. (We were pretty sure it didn't have anything to do with the band name similarity - we were right>.

The Smith Bros is a power pop band here in Columbus. We travel and play a lot of different power pop shows in other cities, as last summer we were in L.A. playing for the International Pop Overthrow festival.

In November of last year we played in North Carolina for Pop Garden Radio presents Rock on the Road. Pop Garden Radio is a radio station in Florida that plays a lot of power pop music, and we wrote the closing theme song for the radio program. We traveled to North Carolina and played that event and they advised that they want this to be a traveling show throughout the United States, and asked us if we wanted to help host the next event.

We agreed and spoke with Rob at the Lazy Chameleon and he was really open to providing his venue for this event. We have Pat Dinizio of The Smithereens playing from 9:00 to 10:30, a band from Youngstown called First in Space opening the event at 8 p.m., The Smith Bros. are playing from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. or so, and then our good friends The Vague, also from Columbus, are playing at 11:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. or so. All of the bands are power pop in sound, so it's guitar driven music with melodies and harmonies. Pretty catchy ear candy for lack of a better description.

It's going to be a really fun night.

Thanks, Mike.

Readers wracking their brains as to why they remember The SMithereens should check out this and this.
