When we connected with Joey Ryan of The Milk Carton Kids, it was on the second try. He apologized for missing our first call, as he was trying to get his phone set up for hands-free use, as he was driving in Los Angeles traffic.
We apologized and implied we wanted him to stay safe.
“I welcome the distraction,” he said.
We then briefly mentioned that folk duos aren’t generally from LA anyway, and asked if he didn’t realize he was supposed to be based on Nashville or Boston or Austin.
“Yeah, I think we just missed the boat.”
If you read our print piece (do so here, if you haven’t), you know we focused a lot on the relationship between Ryan and musical partner Kenneth Pattengale. He gave us lots of great stuff but offered up some comic sarcasm first.
“It’s getting worse. Every day is better than the next,” he said.
You can more of this patter at this link. And details on their Oct. 29 gig at the Lincoln Theatre are available at the link to our print feature above.
