Trailing at halftime, the Bexley High School football team avoided the upset as it scored two touchdowns in the second half to beat visiting Whitehall 20-10 on Friday.

The Lions improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MSL-Ohio Division, and Whitehall dropped to 0-5 and 0-2. The Rams, who led 10-6 at halftime, now have lost 29 games in a row, with their last victory over Bexley 27-21 on Sept. 29, 2005.

"We put ourselves in an early hole," Bexley coach John Smith said. "Our defense did a really nice job tonight. Our offense started to establish the running game near the end of the second quarter and it continued in the second half. I also thought our quarterback put us in good positions, and ran the ball extremely well."

That quarterback was junior Adam Leeds, who threw a pair of touchdowns in his first win as a starter.

"I wanted to get this win tonight at home in front of our fans," Leeds said. "I knew I had to step up to lead my team to victory."
Leeds needed to overcome his interception to Rams cornerback Andrew Burchnell on the third play of the game. Burchnell returned the interception 50 yards for a touchdown to give Whitehall a 7-0 lead.

"Our defense played well tonight," Whitehall coach Greg Lahr said. "They made some plays to help us stay in the game."

The running of quarterback Keith Cox and running back Channin Porter led to a 21-yard field goal by Mitchell Holowitz, increasing the Rams' lead to 10-0 with 2:57 left in the first quarter.

Leeds' 5-yard touchdown pass to Jon Thomas with 16.9 seconds left in the first half awoke the Bexley offense and narrowed the deficit to 10-6.

The Lions took the lead on their first possession of the third quarter. Running back Mike Edwards' 8-yard touchdown run capped an eight-play, 65-yard drive to propel Bexley to a 13-10 lead with 5:51 to go in the third quarter. Edwards carried the ball six times for 43 yards on the drive, and Leeds converted a third-and-3 with a 16-yard pass to Ziyad Khaloufi.

Leeds' second touchdown pass, 15 yards to Alan Hess, put Bexley ahead 20-10 with 2:27 left. The pass came with Bexley facing a fourth-and-11.

Defensive back Christyen Hertlein of Bexley then had an interception with 2:20 remaining to seal the victory.
