Led by running backs Dom Cosby and Mike Mainella, the Canal Winchester High School football team came from behind to beat Fairfield Union 20-16 on Friday.

Canal Winchester improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the MSL-Buckeye Division and Fairfield Union fell to 2-4 and 2-1.

"This is huge for us. It keeps us where we want to be in the Mid-State League and gives us a win over a good opponent who's been playing well recently," Canal Winchester coach Phil Mauro said.

Cosby rushed 13 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 1:11 left in the game. Mainella added 74 yards on 16 carries.

Fairfield Union held the lead until Cosby's score, and for a while it appeared as if a win for Canal Winchester was in doubt. With six minutes left in the fourth and down 16-14, the Indians were driving for the potential go-ahead score when Fairfield Union recovered a fumbled snap at the 3-yard line.

Canal Winchester forced a punt on the Falcons' next possession and defensive end Zack Hitchens got his fingers on it, causing the ball to be downed at the Fairfield Union 37-yard line. Cosby carried the ball five consecutive times on the ensuing possession, scoring on the fifth to put the Indians ahead for good.

The game did not start out well for the Indians as Fairfield Union scored on its first possession. The Falcons used a 15-play drive to move 62 yards, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Tyler Turner.

The Indians responded late in the first on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Justin Whitlatch to Ryan Sabin. A successful extra point tied the game at 7, but that didn't last.

A muffed punt by Canal Winchester left the Indians with the ball at their own 1-yard line. Two plays later Whitlatch recovered a bad snap in the end zone for a safety, giving Fairfield Union a 9-7 lead, which the Falcons took into halftime.

The Falcons extended their lead to 16-7 halfway through the third quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Ross Householder.
Canal Winchester responded on its ensuing possession on a 33-yard run by Cosby to make it 16-14.

"It felt good to get this win. The offensive line really opened up some holes today," Cosby said. "They kind of punched us in the mouth early but we knew the defense and the offensive line would come with it in the second half and overpower them."
