The Westerville South High School football team won a shootout Friday night against Dublin Jerome.

The Wildcats erupted for a season-high in points in a 54-38 win, their third-consecutive victory in OCC-Cardinal Division play after losing all three of its non-league games.

"We're on a good roll right now," South coach Rocky Pentello said. "Our kids have a swagger to them and right now they're loving football, and if you have kids that are loving football, they play good."

The Celtics are also 3-3 overall and dropped to 2-1 in league play.

Quarterback Cortez Fleming spearheaded the Wildcats' effort, rushing for 251 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries. Fleming's dazzling 72-yard touchdown run in the third quarter helped the
visitors building a 48-17 lead.

"Anytime that you do what you want to do on a team that's a good team, you feel good about that," Fleming said.

"Cortez plays with his heart," Pentello said. "He's a very physical player. He's very tough to bring down. He scorched our defense on Wednesday. We went ones-on-ones for about 20 minutes and he
just scorched us. They said they were just going to carry that over into the game and that's what they did."

After spotting Jerome a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter on Steve Mehrer's 1-yard touchdown run, the Wildcats scored 27 unanswered points.

South took advantage of a Jerome fumble to tie the game as Fleming scored on a 2-yard run late in the first quarter. Fleming added touchdown runs of 1, 8 and 2 yards in the second quarter to push the lead to 27-7.

South put the game out of reach early in the second half as Ryan Clark raced 79 yards for a touchdown on his team's first play from scrimmage. Clark rushed for 163 yards on nine carries.

The Celtics managed to close to within 48-30 early in the final quarter on Cameron Wilson's 19-yard run, but South remained in control.

Quarterback Kevin Jackson was a bright spot for the Celtics as he completed 24 of 42 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns.

Jerome's Joe Horine caught 12 passes for 132 yards, but the Celtics committed five turnovers.

"It's like a snowball effect," Fleming said of his team's success. "We're just trying to get better every day. Every (repetition), we're just trying to be perfect. We practice like we just want to be perfect. In
the game, hopefully it will come natural."
