Steve Mehrer rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns and the Dublin Jerome High School football team defeated host Westerville Central 30-7 on Friday to qualify for the Division II, Region 7 playoffs.

The Celtics are in the playoffs for the second time since the program started in 2004. First-round pairings will be announced Sunday.
Mehrer spearheaded a Celtics rushing attack, which gained 252 yards on the ground to help Jerome score all its points unanswered.

"Our offensive line played well tonight," said Mehrer 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the OCC-Cardinal Division. "They worked so hard this week, and it really showed tonight."

Central quickly scored on its first offensive possession. Quarterback Kyle Stephenson completed a pass to Luke Meissner for a 54-yard gain and then Stephenson scored on a 15-yard run on the next play for a 7-0 lead.

Jerome scrapped the spread offense after quarterback Kevin Jackson threw an interception on the next possession. Following the interception, Mehrer scored his first of three touchdowns on a 13-yard run in the second quarter to tie the game at 7.

Chris Bahr scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as Jerome led 14-7 at halftime.

Mehrer helped put Jerome ahead 23-7 on a 15-yard run one play after a fumble recovery by Cole O'Brien on the first play of the fourth quarter. Mehrer scored his third touchdown on a 49-yard run with just over two minutes left in the game.

"We had out opportunities," Central coach Bob Fresch said, whose team finished at 0-10 and 0-7. "We missed tackles, and we three too many picks and had too many turnovers."

Jerome's defense, which held Central to total 190 yards, intercepted Stephenson three times, twice by Jeff Robison. The Celtics also sacked Stephenson for a safety in the third quarter to make it 16-7.
