After watching the Dublin Scioto High School football team average 40 points in its last three games, Marysville figured its ball-control option attack would come in the handy.

On Friday, the Monarchs rushed for more than 200 yards and came up with a big defensive stop in the closing seconds to prevail 13-10 and keep its playoff hopes alive in Division I.

"We came out and I fumbled on the first drive and they got a quick score, but from there we just kept our heads up," said Marysville quarterback Luke Fleming, whose team improved to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the OCC-Cardinal Division. "We just kept pushing and punching, and it was a team effort tonight."

Scioto, which dropped to 5-5 and 4-3, watched its final drive end at the Marysville 30 on fourth-and-14 with 19 seconds to play. Quarterback Charlie Suich had to try and run for the first down and came up short.

The Monarchs attempted just three passes, but one of them, a halfback throw from Hayes Chrispin to Kyle Eubanks for a 38 yard touchdown with 7:38 left in the third quarter, was enough to win.

It was a significant blow for the Scioto defense which had to come back on the field after Marysville jumped on a punt that had been touched by an Irish player.

"Our defense came through when we really needed them to," Marysville coach Jeff Gafford said. "We got some pressure, some sacks and some negative plays on that final drive and that was big for us."

Scioto's only second-half points came on a 33-yard field goal by Rainer Duzan with 10:58 in the fourth quarter.

Bradley McDougald, who rushed 12 times for 65 yards, thought he had scored on a 93-yard punt return in the third quarter, but the play was called back on a penalty.

Nathan Weeks carried the load for the Monarchs with 115 yards on 27 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown run.

Fleming finished with 80 yards on 15 carries.

"They had a good game plan and their defense played very well and kept us from getting into a rhythm," Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. "Their offense stayed on the field and you've got to give them credit for making the plays when they had to."
