Seven teams from central Ohio managed to advance out of high school cross country regionals Saturday at Pickerington North and Troy to the state meet Nov. 1 at Scioto Downs, and the area will be well-represented individually with an additional 14 moving on.

The top four teams and 16 individuals from each race advanced.

The top three teams in the Division I boys race at North were Hilliard Davidson (76), Hilliard Darby (87) and Reynoldsburg (99). Davidson's Yoshi Shimizu won individually in 16 minutes, 5 seconds, with Dublin Scioto's Luis Carabajal second (16:10). Other individual qualifiers were Westerville North's Jeff Hannaford (seventh, 16:13), Gahanna's Chase Beckman (eighth, 16:15) and North's Brian Hannaford (12th, 16:22).

After easily winning district a week earlier with its entire seven-runner lineup among the top 15, the Upper Arlington girls stumbled a litte at regional but still took third (79) behind Cincinnati Oak Hills (61) and Kings Mills Kings (72). Michelle Thomas of Cincinnati Glen Este won individually in 17:59.

Local individuals who advanced were Davidson's Tori Brink (fourth, 18:46), Gahanna's KayKay Garber (10th, 19:21) and Davidson's Jessica Hoover (12th, 19:26).

"(Advancing to state) has been our goal all year, and now it's just icing on the cake," Garber's coach, Ernie Ziegle, said. "We knew she had it in her all along. We're not just happy to be here, we want to accomplish a few things."

The only Division II team qualifiers were the Johnstown girls (first, 120) and Canal Winchester girls (third ,128), both from the North site. Individually, Melissa Thompson of DeSales was seventh (19:43) at North and Rebekah Reese of Centennial was 11th (19:50) at Troy.

Caleb Muller (12th, 17:01) and Zach Arace (15th, 17:04) of Bexley qualified out of the Division II boys regional at North, and Big Walnut's Micah Armbrust (seventh, 16:41) advanced from the Troy regional.
The Grandview boys team highlighted the Division III results, taking third (132) at North behind Bellaire St. John Central (45) and Fredericktown (118). Among Division III girls, Hannah Stefanoff of Grandview was second (19:41) at North behind defending state champion Stephanie Morgan (18:21) of Barnesville.
