After a stop for a quick meal at Tensuke Express, we decided to stop by Crescent Bakery & Cafe, located in a Japanese enclave in Kenny Center.

It had been a while since we patronized Crescent, which has a singularly appealing draw: the dorian ($1.70 each). We had sung its praises in the past and will continue to do so as long as the consistency stays the same.

As a friend put it: "This is one of the best things I've tasted in a while."

How's that for an endorsement?

It's best described as an unconventional donut: a domed pastry, with a snowy shower of powdered sugar on top. Inside is a soothing mix of custard and butternut cream. Off the calorie charts, to be sure, but nothing a brisk walk or two around the neighborhood couldn't cure.

There certainly are a number of quality sweet and savory desserts at Crescent, such as the flaky croissant ($1) or the cream puff, with a little chopped orange in with the custard ($1.20. But the dorian is the thing. We were sad to see the cafe had discontinued its lunch service, but we're happy to give a little treat almost all of our affection.

The bakery, 1168 Kenny Center, is closed on Monday. Be sure to take cash because credit cards aren't accepted.
