SYLVANIA Unable to overcome turnovers and missed opportunities, the Olentangy High School football team had a story stay in the postseason, falling 28-14 to host Sylvania Southview in a Division II game.

Two costly turnovers derailed the seventh-seeded Braves.

The first came when cornerback Mo May returned a Justin Johnson interception 35 yards for a touchdown putting the Cougars ahead 14-7 with a little over six minutes remaining the first half.

"We really didn't want to give up an interception," said Olentangy coach Ed Terwilliger, whose squad finished 7-4.

The second turnover for Olentangy was probably the most devastating as it eliminated the opportunity for the Braves to make it a tie game as the first half was expiring. With the ball inside the Southview 1-yard line, Johnson fumbled as he tried to reach into the end zone.

"I didn't think it was a fumble," Terwilliger said.

Running back Thomas Carpenter simply said: "He was in."

Olentangy's first score was the result of a drive last almost eight minutes, capped by a 1-yard run by Carpenter.

"Our goal was to keep them off the field," Terwilliger said of Southview, which averaged 46 points a game during the regular season. "And for the first quarter, we were able to do exactly what we wanted."

Defensively the Braves became the first team to hold Southview scoreless in the first quarter. However, as the game progressed the Cougars' offense was able to wear down the Braves.

Southview quarterback Alex Pidcock proved to be a versatile threat as he completed nine of 13 passes for 124 yards and carried the ball 22 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars, ranked sixth in the final state poll, improved to 11-0.

Carpenter finished with who finished with 109 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Despite the loss, he said he was proud of what the Braves had accomplished in part because of the opening of Orange High School, in which Olentangy lost 49 players to the Pioneers' program.

"No one expected us to do much this season. We showed the whole community what we could do."
