Jasmine Smith and Au-Juvan Anderson scored 12 points to lead the Beechcroft High School girls basketball team to a 55-51 victory over Westerville North on Tuesday during the Phil Brown Rotary Holiday Classic at Otterbein.

The Cougars moved to 4-4 overall and North fell to 3-5.

Smith hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points in the second period and Anderson added eight more points as the Cougars erased a 12-5 deficit by scoring 25 points to take a 30-24 lead at halftime.

"I was a bit nervous about going to a 3-2 (zone defense), but (North point guard Monique Jones) was beating us in the lane," Beechcroft coach Mike Fleming said. "We went into the 2-3 and were able to rotate to the corner to keep them from making shots."

The Warriors rallied to take a three-point lead with 6 minutes, 18 seconds remaining on a basket by Danielle Johnson in the fourth, but Beechcroft went on a 10-0 run to seal the victory.

"I didn't want to call a timeout because sometimes they can panic," Fleming said. "I knew if we could get a good defensive stop, that would help us work through (falling behind)."

Miyoshi McGee added nine points for the Cougars and TaRonna Neal had eight.

"That's a good basketball team," North coach Jim Kloepfer said. "You have to give them credit because they came out and got the job done against us."

Megan Lutz led North with 12 points and Jones added 10 points, including two 3-pointers. Corrine Smith also had 10 points.
