The backcourt of Katherine Calo and Shanae` Ash dominated the third quarter for the Westerville South High School girls basketball team in a 53-43 victory over Westerville Central on Saturday in an OCC-Cardinal Division game.

Ash and Calo scored 12 of South's 16 points in the third quarter.

South led 15-5, but Central cut the deficit to 30-27 with 3:20 left in the third quarter before Calo and Ash each scored two points as the Wildcats led 37-28 at the break.

"Calo was a big part and Ash got going in the second half," said Central coach Doug Etgen, whose team fell to 4-10 overall and 1-8 in the OCC-Cardinal. "They're so much more balanced than we are offensively."

South won its seventh consecutive game to improve to 9-4 and 7-2 and also completed the season sweep of the Warhawks. The Wildcats also won 46-39 on Dec. 10.

The defense set the tone for the Wildcats, who never trailed.

"Our pressure was really good in the first quarter," South coach Jeff Brenning said. "After that I felt we took some gambles defensively and they kicked our butt on the boards."

Rachel Dolby and Aly Jurcenko each scored 11 points to lead Central. Dolby also grabbed nine rebounds.
