The Canal Winchester High School boys basketball team defeated Jonathan Alder 50-31 in the second round of the Division II district tournament Friday at Grove City.

Canal Winchester moves to 17-4 overall and will play seventh-seeded Granville in a district semifinal Thursday in the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Granville defeated New Albany 58-54 in overtime. Jonathan Alder finished 3-18.

"I felt good about our defense," Canal Winchester coach Kent Riggs said. "To hold a team to 31 (points) is always good."

Canal Winchester was never really challenged, taking a 14-6 lead en route to lead 25-15 at the half.

"I thought we played well in the second quarter," Riggs said. "We had good shots. We just weren't making many of them."

Any thoughts of a comeback for Jonathan Alder ended in the third quarter as the Pioneers missed their first eight field-goal attempts of the third quarter and trailed 33-15.

Canal Winchester scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, which gave the Indians a 41-21 lead. Jonathan Alder managed to draw within 16 points but the Indians' Anthony Riggs hit a 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 24 seconds left for a 46-27 lead.

Aaron Barber led Canal Winchester with 14 points. Wes White had 10 and Riggs had nine.

Jonathan Alder was paced by Dustin Hochstetler, who had 11 points.
