The third-seeded Grove City High School boys basketball team beat Lancaster 95-66 on Saturday in the second round of the Division I district tournament at New Albany.

Grove City, which improved to 20-2, will play 11th-seeded Mount Vernon in a district semifinal March 7 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Lancaster finished 3-18.

Grove City and Lancaster also met twice in OCC-Ohio Division play, with the Greyhounds winning 75-53 on Dec. 19 and 100-31 on Jan. 31.

Grove City took a 50-33 lead in the first half as 6-foot-7 post player Jon Smith scored 18 points. In the first three minutes of the third quarter, Grove City increased that to 58-33.

"We always talk to our kids about the first three minutes of the second half," coach Greg Waits said. "It sets the tone for the rest of the game. We've got to play harder in those first three minutes than we did at all in the first half."

During that run, Smith and Cody Funk scored four points. Funk finished the quarter with 12 of his 19 points.

"It's always important when you're up to step on the team's throat," Smith said. "That first three minutes of the third quarter is going to dictate what happens the rest of the game."

Grove City led throughout as Smith finished with 26 points. Lancaster was led by Nick Blanton with 17 points and Steven Bridgeman with 14.
