Heath High School senior Tyler Paulsen was the only placer from Licking County during the Division II state swimming and diving meet, which concluded Saturday.

Paulsen, who advanced in four events, finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.23 seconds. He was 10th in the 100 free (48.33) and also competed with the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

This is the first season with two boys divisions.

"We knew once they split the divisions we had a better chance of going," Paulsen said after the Bulldogs were represented at state for the first time. "I worked harder than I have in practice. I worked on my starters and my turns. You put those two things together and you see what happens, I guess."

Granville's Robbie Spichiger, who also competed in four events, placed 11th in the 200 free (1:47.69).

"I have been working on my turns a lot. I missed one of my walls but I was able to come away with a good time," he said. "I was trying to hold over my taper for this meet. I had a really good district meet and I haven't been able to hit those times here. It's hard to hold your taper. A lot of people pick up time here. I need to work on that."

Granville freshman Lori Davis, another four-event participant, finished ninth in both the girls 50 free (24.53) and 100 free (53.56). Davis also swam a leg as the 200 free relay (1:42.42) finished 10th.

"I had a good warm up, a good start and a good kick off the wall and a good finish," Davis said of her effort in the 100 free. "It's been amazing going against all these girls. My goal is next year is to be over there (in the championship heat)."
