The Whetstone High School softball team beat host Briggs 9-0 on Wednesday to earn the City League championship.

The Braves scored five runs over the first two innings in support of pitcher Allie Webb, who tossed a two-hit shutout to lead her team to a 9-0 win as it finished 19-5.

After Melissa Tewart-Darwin reached on an error with two outs in the first for the Braves, Kate Gordon hit one past the center fielder and raced in for a two-run home run.

Tewart-Darwin came back with a two-run single to cap a three-run second inning. The Braves scored four times in the sixth as both Gordon and Katie Dozer had two-run singles.
Briggs finished 12-7.

"Kate's hit (in the first inning) really set the stage for the whole game," Whetstone coach Larry Peck said. "That allowed us to relax. We were really well-prepared for this game."
