The Whetstone High School baseball team captured the City League title by defeating host Briggs 10-6 on Wednesday.

A five-run seventh inning provided the necessary cushion for the Braves, who finished 17-8.

Dan Dozer slugged a two-run home run over the left-field fence to give the Braves a 2-0 lead and then added an RBI-single in the fourth.

The Bruins cut it to 4-2 in the fifth on a Zach Taylor two-run single before three errors led to a Whetstone run in the sixth.

Briggs made it 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Josh Staszak, but the Braves got a three-run home run from Chris Kelley and scored five times in the seventh.

Ben Jackson earned the win for Whetstone, which finished with 12 hits.

Briggs finished 15-11. Last season, the Bruins beat Whetstone 11-10 in the City final.

"Our pitchers weren't as sharp as they were all year, but we battled out of it," coach Tim Broskie said. "We just moved Dan Dozer to leadoff last week and he's leading our team in home runs with four."
