The Watterson High School football team took advantage of the opportunities it was presented to knock off Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 20-7 last Friday.

The Eagles set the tone early, forcing a three-and-out on the game's first series. Steven Vagnier blocked the ensuing punt and recovered the ball on the Irish's 4-yard line.

Two plays later, quarterback Andy Elberson found senior fullback Ray Cook in the end zone to put the Eagles up 7-0 just three minutes into the game.

The Irish struck early in the second quarter as quarterback Oliver Hildebrandt threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Doran Grant to tie the game at 7.

Watterson had a chance to take the lead before halftime as the Irish turned over the ball for the third time of the half as Matt Redfield recovered a fumble. The drive ended when Tim Carter missed a 27-yard field-goal attempt.

However, Carter opened the second-half scoring by making a 35-yard field for a 10-7 lead.

Elberson completed his only other pass of the game, hitting Redfield for 15 yards. Elberson finished the evening 2-for-5 passing for 19 yards and a touchdown.

The fourth quarter was more of the same of the Irish turning over the ball.

Justin McCarthy intercepted Hildebrandt and his 38-yard return pushed the margin go 17-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Grant fumbled and Vagnier recovered. Carter then added a 34-yard field to close the scoring.

Watterson's offense also didn't have a great evening as the Eagles rushed for 101 yards and finished with 120 total yards. Daniel Gelpi rushed for 25 yards on eight carries and Redfield had 21 yards on six carries.
