Jourdan Wickliffe scored two second-half touchdowns and added an interception on the third play of the second half to lead the host St. Charles Preparatory School football team to a 27-20 win Friday night over Canal Winchester in the opener for both teams.

Wickliffe picked off a pass by Canal Winchester quarterback Drew Black at the Indians' 29-yard line, returning it 13 yards to the 16. Five plays later, the senior wide receiver scored on a 4-yard run to tie the game at 13.

"That interception was huge," Canal Winchester coach Phil Mauro said. "(Wickliffe makes a big pick and the momentum shifted over to them. We only had one turnover. Otherwise we did a good job of taking care of the football."

The Cardinals scored two more second-half touchdowns, one on Joe Hartge's18-yard run in the third quarter and the other on a 23-yard reverse by Wickliffe on fourth-and-7 with 2 minutes, 57 seconds remaining.

"Jourdan is a special player and he had the kind of game we know that he could have," St. Charles coach Jeff Pharion said.

"He put the ball on the ground in the first half and really wanted to make up for it."

That fumble helped Canal Winchester take a 13-6 halftime lead. The Indians scored with 9:36 left in the half when Black hit Austin Whitlach on a 18-yard scoring pass. Courtland Williams pounced on his second fumble of the game when Wickliffe's fumble was recovered at the St. Charles 35. Jacob Estep would complete the seven-play drive with a 2-yard run.

J. Schroeder kicked a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 42-yarder late in the first half for St. Charles.

Black scored on a 4-yard run with 1:26 to play, as the Indians' quarterback rushed for 96 yards on 12 carries.

"We held on to the football and played with an attitude in the second half," Pharion said.

Quarterback Joe Spahr led the Cardinals in rushing with 88 yards on 19 carries and Hartge added 61 yards on 17 tries.

Joe Sweeney caught three passes for 44 yards, as Spahr was 8-for-20 passing for 111 yards.

Black was 9-for-17 passing for 91 yards and an interception. Cody Ferguson caught three passes for 53 yards.
