With more than a little help from its host, the DeSales High School football team defeated Gahanna 28-14 last Friday.

The Lions were penalized eight times for 110 yards and committed one costly turnover.

Gahanna was called for pass interference early in the first quarter that moved DeSales into Lions' territory and extended a drive that would ultimately result in a 7-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Nick Gentile to junior wide receiver Charles Chandler.

The following possession Gahanna running back Mitchell Rowell was stripped by DeSales defensive end Santino Cua who then returned the ball 17 yards for a touchdown to give the Stallions a 14-0 advantage.

"Frustrating" was the only way Gahanna coach John Snoad could describe his team's week one performance.

"When you block with your hands outside the box you get holding, when you block below the waist you get clipping. It was very frustrating with our mistakes," Snoad said. "Bottom line is who doesn't make stupid mistakes usually wins, and we made mistakes. They are a class program and executed very well, they didn't make many mistakes and we continued to shoot ourselves in the foot."

DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins gave credit to his defense.

"I thought we came out intense, made some plays early on when we had to. Really the key was our defense was strong the whole night," he said.

Offensively each team was unable to consistently establish any type of rhythm.

Gentile passed and rushed for a combined 99 total yards and two touchdowns. Junior standout running back Warren Ball was contained for much of the game until he broke free on a 39-yard scoring run with 6 minutes, 17 seconds remainng in the third quarter to push the margin to 28-0. Ball finished with 11 carries for 75 yards.

Gahanna finally got on the scoreboard when senior quarterback Tanner Zwelling connected with junior wide receiver Julian Lowe for a 42-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Zwelling finished five of 12 passing for 71 yards. Backup quarterback Alec Tuohy closed the scoring with a late 7-yard run.
