Ross Franklin and Frank Chambers each rushed for more than 100 yards to help lead the Johnstown-Monroe High School football team past Granville 41-14 on Saturday in the opener for both schools.

The Johnnies led 28-0 midway through the second quarter in a game played at Licking Valley because of turf problems at Johnstown.

"They beat us in all phases of the game," Granville coach J.R. Wait said. "They outplayed us and out-executed us. They could have scored 60 points. One good thing is that it's early in the season and maybe we can get things together before we get into the (MSL-Ohio Division) schedule."

Fullback Nick SanFilipo ended Johnstown's opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 50 seconds left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Seth Short recovered a fumble on a botched Granville reverse at the Blue Aces' 8-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Matt Smith scored on a 5-yard run to give the Johnnies a 14-0 lead.

Smith scored on a 23-yard touchdown run and Chambers added a 25-yard run in the second quarter.

"The hard work we've had has paid off and we had a good game in the trenches," Johnstown coach Mike Carter said. "We knew we had to play four quarters because they have explosive athletes and the ability to get back in the game quickly."

Granville got its initial first down with 5:20 left in the first half and scored on a 14-yard run by Zach Lilly with 1:38 left before halftime.

The Blue Aces' Josh McKenzie returned the second-half kickoff 52 yards to the Johnstown 47. Granville then scored five plays later on a 16-yard run by Josh Link with 10:05 left in the third. But Franklin scored touchdown runs of 2 and 6 yards to end the Granville rally.

Franklin finished with 170 yards on 19 carries and Chambers added 115 yards on 14 carries. Smith had 81 yards in 11 carries and was 1-for-6 passing for 6 yards.

Lilly led Granville with 91 yards on 18 carries and backup quarterback David Fraley rushed for 61 yards on six carries.

Taylor Compton started at quarterback for the Blue Aces, going 4-for-15 for 27 yards.
