Frank Epitropoulos scored on a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Johns with seven seconds left, giving the Upper Arlington High School football team a 24-17 win over visiting Dresden Tri-Valley on Friday.

The touchdown pass was one of three thrown by Johns, who completed 14 of 23 passes for 290 yards a high number considering he totaled 469 passing yards in the five games he started last season.

"We've got four great receivers," Epitropoulos said. "We've been working on (the passing game) in practice and it paid off in the game. If it keeps going, we'll keep doing it."

UA built a 17-3 halftime lead behind 26-yard field goal by Alex Whitcomb, a 72-yard touchdown pass from Johns to wide receiver Zach Powers and a 2-yard touchdown pass from Johns to tight end Johnny Mikes.

"We knew going in that it was going to be tough to run, so we worked hard on the pass this week because we knew they would get eight or nine kids in the box," Bears coach Mike Golden said. "The strength of their defense is stopping the run."

Tri-Valley, which finished 9-2 last season and qualified for the Division II playoffs, rallied to tie the score at 17 with two second-half touchdowns. The tying touchdown was scored with 5:47 left.

"We were a little too happy at halftime and they took advantage of it. They came to win," Golden said. "But we did show a lot of character to come back and make some big plays (on the winning drive)."

UA was held to 39 yards in the second half until its final drive, which began on its own 20 with 46 seconds left. The Bears went 80 yards in six plays, with Johns' throw for the winning score splitting two defenders before reaching Epitropoulos at the goal line.

"We ran that play earlier and it was pretty open but we didn't have enough time," Epitropoulos said. "This time we had a lineman pulled out and we got the touchdown. We weren't nervous; we stayed confident (before the winning drive). We kept going down field and it paid off in the end."
