The Big Walnut High School football team rallied in the second half to defeat visiting Westerville Central 28-26 on Friday, giving the Golden Eagles the WarEagle Trophy for the eighth consecutive year.

The Warhawks led 20-0 at halftime, but the Golden Eagles stormed back in the second half, scoring 28 unanswered points to take a 28-20 lead.

Sophomore quarterback Carson Chatterton, who was filling in for starting quarterback Tyler Beam, scored on a 20-yard run with 1 minute, 48 seconds remaining to give Big Walnut its first lead at 21-20.

Beam, who also is the team's punter, left the game in the second quarter after sustaining a possible concussion during a Westerville Central punt return.

"It was very exciting," Chatterton said of the go-ahead score. "That's my boys at the line saving my butt."

Joey Johnson followed with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown on the Warhawks' next play from scrimmage, giving the Golden Eagles a 28-20 lead with 1:43 left.

Central closed to within 28-26 when quarterback Spencer Allen connected with Jalen Jones for a 70-yard touchdown, but the spot for the two-point conversion attempt was pushed back 15 yards to the 18 after Jones was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Tight end Nick Vannett bobbled and dropped Allen's pass on the conversion attempt near the goal line, securing the Eagles come-from-behind win.

"The team works very hard and deserved this win," Chatterton said. "I practice with these guys on and off, on and off, on and off. Everybody has to be ready, everybody has to be ready to play every play."

Central jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first half behind Miles Fisher's 49-yard touchdown run and Allen's touchdown passes of 10 and 52 yards to Vannett and Max Shawver, respectively.

Fisher finished with 143 yards on 16 carries. Allen completed 12 of 26 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns.
