After a year away from football, Grove City returned to face No. 1 Hilliard Davidson and, before a crowd estimated at 12,000, fell 28-21 to the defending Division I state champions. It was no surprise that Marion-Franklin defeated Brookhaven but the final score 27-2 was shocking. Ditto that for New Albany, who defeated host Licking Valley 26-10. The one moderate surprise was No. 4 Westerville South falling to Groveport 19-10. That made it possible for the Red Devils to join the poll at No. 5.
