A battle of powerhouse offenses will be on display Friday when the Johnstown-Monroe High School football team travels to Fredericktown for a battle of MBC unbeatens.
The Johnnies have outscored opponents 167-68. The Freddies have outscored opponents 219-39, including a 55-3 win over Northridge on Sept. 17 and a 63-0 win over Danville last Friday. Fredericktown beat Sparta Highland 17-14 in the opener on Aug. 27, but has not scored fewer than 42 points since.
Last season, the Freddies shut out Johnstown 22-0 en route to a perfect league record and an MBC championship. Johnstown won the league title in 2008 and '07.
The game features two of the area's top running backs in Johnstown's Ross Franklin and the Freddies' Matt Smith. Franklin has rushed for 1,022 yards on 91 carries, an 11.2 average per attempt, with 10 touchdowns. Last Friday in a 27-6 win over Loudonville, he had 266 yards on 32 carries with touchdowns of 89 and 4 yards.
Against Danville, Smith rushed for 161 yards on 14 carries with touchdowns of 1, 4, 32 and 42 yards. For the season, he has 866 yards on 33 carries, an average of 10.4 per carry.
