While it might not be surprising to many that the Northland High School football team could be on its way to a third winning season in four years, not many would have predicted the success that Centennial has had thus far.

Centennial is on a three-game winning streak after losing its previous 34.

The Stars have found success behind the duo of quarterback Wesley Russell and running back Taylor Wicks, who combined for three touchdowns last Friday in an 18-12 win over Mifflin. Centennial trailed 12-6 heading into the final period before Russell returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown and Wicks added an 8-yard scoring run. Wicks had 96 yards rushing last Friday after rushing for 168 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-18 win over Linden-McKinley on Sept. 17.

Northland bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Brookhaven on Sept. 17 to beat Columbus East 35-0 last Friday.

The Vikings got 159 yards and three touchdowns from running back Jarrell Jones, a Miami University-recruit who was banged up for most of the season's first month. J.J. Sanders also has proven to be able to put up big numbers, finishing with 186 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-14 loss to Pickerington North on Sept. 10.

While Centennial is one of 20 teams in Division II, Region 7 to have at least three victories, Northland is one of 15 teams in Division I, Region 3 with at least three wins.

Last season, Northland beat the Stars 40-0.
