The Thomas Worthington High School football team was 10 seconds from its first win over Worthington Kilbourne.

Kilbourne tied the game on Sheldon Tillman's 1-yard touchdown run with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and Josh Hudson rushed 20 yards for the winning score in overtime as the Wolves defeated the host Cardinals 13-7 on Friday.

Hudson ran through several attempted tackles and carried a couple of Cardinals defenders into the end zone on Kilbourne's first play of overtime.

"I just told myself before the play that I'm not going to stop (running) until they blow that whistle," said Hudson, who rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries.

Kilbourne finished 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the OCC-Central Division. Thomas ended at 3-7 and 1-5.

The Wolves' defense also did its part in overtime, stopping the Cardinals on third- and fourth-down runs from the 1-yard line on the opening possession. Kilbourne stuffed a sneak by Thomas quarterback John Chadwell and then turned back fullback Mike Pisching.

Cardinals coach Scott Gordon passed on letting Kyle Dineen attempt a field goal for a potential three-point lead. Dineen missed two longer field-goal attempts during the game.

"We felt like we could kick a field goal from there, but we thought that was a little demoralizing," Gordon said.

The Wolves, whose offense was stymied for much of the game, drove 61 yards in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to tie it on Tillman's 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal.

Thomas took a 7-0 lead on Chadwell's 9-yard touchdown pass to Eric Sutton with 9:27 left in the fourth. The score capped a 10-play, 86-yard drive.

Kilbourne won the previous two meetings in the series 28-13 last year and 48-3 in 2008.

"It was heartbreaking. That's all I can describe it as," said Chadwell, who was 16-for-33 passing for 189 yards.

Thomas running back Eric Monfort was held to 40 yards rushing on 20 carries.
