Westerville North and host Groveport both will be seeking their first win in their matchup Friday, Sept. 2.

North opened with a 21-7 loss to Worthington Kilbourne on Aug. 26. With the Warriors trailing 21-0 in the third quarter, quarterback B.J. Campfield threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Norris Freeman.

The Warriors' offense struggled to sustain drives against Kilbourne, finishing with just 131 total yards - 88 rushing and 43 passing.

The loss was the 26th in a row for North. Its last victory was 21-17 over Westerville Central on Sept. 19, 2008.

Groveport, which finished 6-4 last season, opened with a 47-18 loss to Westerville South on Aug. 26.

Cruisers quarterback Shane Denny, who is being recruited by several Division I colleges, struggled against South's defense. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound senior and three-year starter completed only 10 of 24 passes for 129 yards.

South's defense limited Groveport to 184 rushing yards on 33 carries. Senior tailback Melvin Smith led the Cruisers with 108 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. He scored on a 1-yard run to put Groveport ahead 6-0 and added a 4-yard touchdown run to pull the Cruisers within 14-12 late in the first quarter.

Groveport turned the ball over three times and had a punt blocked.

The Cruisers, meanwhile, had trouble containing South's offense. Wildcats quarterback Marcus Ball was 11-for-19 passing for 159 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Daxton Cates rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

Last season, Groveport defeated North 29-22. The contest represented the closest loss for the Warriors all season.
