The Columbus Symphony Orchestra begins 2012 with a decidedly European flavor.

The concerts on Friday and Sunday, Jan. 6 and 8, feature the works of orchestral giants Mozart and Brahms, and will be led by Swiss-born guest conductor Matthias Bamert and joined by guest violin soloist Yossif Ivanov of Belgium.

The programs highlight Ivanov on Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major. The CSO also performs the composer’s Symphony No. 25 in G minor and the Schoenberg orchestration of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor.

The concerts will be held in the Ohio Theatre. Tickets are $28-$24.75. Visit www.columbussymphony.com.

Better than 12 drummers drumming is The Early Interval’s annual Twelfth Night program.

Columbus’ own Medieval/Renaissance ensemble offers its annual program based on this once-common celebration Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8, at First Congregational Church. And really, what better way to end the holiday season than with concerts based on, well, the end of the holiday season?

This year’s program is “A Spanish Twelfth Night,” featuring period music for Advent and Christmas as well as by Spanish composers such as Guerreo and de Victoria, and music from the courts of Spanish royalty.

Tickets are $27-$12. Visit www.earlymusiccolumbus.org.

Opera Project Columbus continues its inaugural season with a presentation of Giancarlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors Friday and Saturday, Jan. 7-8, at St. Charles Preparatory School’s Walter Commons.

Featuring two local boys — Luke Peart and Logan Van Bibber — singing the lead role, and a cast and orchestra conducted by former Columbus Symphony Orchestra maestro Alessandro Siciliani, the production comes just two weeks after the 60th anniversary of its first presentation, Dec. 24, 1951, on NBC television.

The piece has some early Columbus connections, which you can get details on in the BeatBlog at www.ThisWeekNews.com.

Tickets are $30/$25. Visit www.operaprojectcolumbus.org.

John Fullbright is a freak.

And by that we mean he’s good.

He’s a gifted musician and songwriter, and carries within his young body one of those old souls. A pup at 22, Fullbright is not old-timey as much as is old-time.

Columbus audiences may have caught a glimpse last summer when he opened for Michael Fracasso at the Columbus Maennerchor. Zeppelin Productions had to invite him back to do a show of his own.

Check him out Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Grand Valley Dale Ballroom. Tickets are $25. Visit www.zeppcolumbus.com.
