ThisWeek captures 20 statewide awards

State's best non-daily newspaper and sports section among Press Club accolades

ThisWeek Community News captured 20 awards Friday, June 6, in the Press Club of Cleveland's 2014 Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest.

Included was the top award for weekly papers in the contest, Best Non-Daily Newspaper in Ohio, for ThisWeek Westerville News & Public Opinion.

Second place for Best Non-Daily in the state went to another ThisWeek paper, ThisWeek Dublin Villager.

ThisWeek also won first-place awards for non-daily newspapers in Breaking News reporting, three different categories of photography, for Best Sports Column and Best Section.

First place in Breaking News went to news reporter Kevin Corvo for his coverage of a fatal house fire in ThisWeek Hilliard Northwest News.

First place in General Feature photography for went to Lorrie Cecil.

Cecil also won first place for Pictorial photography for her work covering the Little Brown Jug in ThisWeek Delaware News.

ThisWeek Chief Photographer Joshua A. Bickel won first place in Sports Photography for his "Gaston providing inspiration" photo appearing in ThisWeek Rocky Fork Enterprise in Gahanna. Bickel also won second place in the same category for a Hilliard photo.

ThisWeek sports reporter Scott Hennen won first place in Sports Column for his piece published in the ThisWeek Tri-Village News, "Grandview comes together, stays strong for Hall."

Finally, the ThisWeek Sports staff won first place for Best Non-Daily Section in the state for ThisWeek Hilliard Northwest News, as well as third place for Best Section among non-dailies for ThisWeek Dublin Villager.

In all, ThisWeek won seven first-place, seven second-place and six third-place awards in the contest.

* Cartoonist Jim Larrick in the Open Print categories of Single Cartoon and Best Cartoonist in Ohio.

* Marla Kuhlman in Features-Personality Profile for her story on a retiring postal carrier in Gahanna.

* Jennifer Noblit, Pamela Willis and other news reporters in Public Service reporting for their series on school security.

* Hennen for a Sports story on a Johnstown girls track athlete's recovery from a knee injury in ThisWeek Johnstown Independent.

Additional third-place awards went to:

* ThisWeekNews.com for Best Website in Ohio.

* ThisWeekSports.com for Digital Media -- Best Use of Social Media for its Twitter coverage of Friday-night high school football.

* Arts reporter Jim Fischer in the Open Print category for Lifestyle coverage.

* Former news reporter Jennifer Nesbitt in Features-Personality Profile for her story on a Westerville school board member with Lou Gehrig's disease.

* Jarrod Ulrey in Sports story on father coaching against his daughter in a lacrosse game for a story published in ThisWeek Pickerington Times-Sun.

ThisWeek Community News publishes 24 weekly newspapers and one shopper in central Ohio, with circulation in excess of 323,000. News coverage efforts are led by Managing Editor/News Joe Meyer, and sports and photography coverage is led by Managing Editor Sports & Photography Lee Cochran.
