Grossman defeats Johnson in 23rd Ohio House race

Ohio Rep. Cheryl L. Grossman (R-Grove City) was successful at the polls Nov. 6 in her re-election bid to represent the 23rd Ohio House District.

Grossman, 61, and the assistant majority whip for the Ohio House of Representatives, dispatched her Democratic challenger, Traci “T.J.” Johnson, 47.

According to unofficial results from the Franklin County Board of Elections posted Tuesday night, with all 106 precincts in the district reporting, Grossman won by a count of 26,248 votes, or 56 percent, to 13,171 votes, or 44 percent.

“A lot has been accomplished but a lot of work remains to be done, and I will remain vigilant while representing the people in my district,” Grossman said Tuesday night from a gathering in downtown Columbus where her staff monitored election returns.

“We started the 129th General Assembly with a $8.5 billion deficit and were able to significantly close the gap without raising taxes,” Grossman said.

Grossman pledged to work in a collaborative manner and said she “looks forward to continuing to serve” while working to make Ohio the best place to work and live.

Grossman served as mayor of Grove City from 1996 to 2008. Prior to being mayor, the lifelong resident of Grove City served on City Council.

Grossman and her husband of 41 years, Ron, have two adult sons, Justin and Joshua.

Johnson, though unsuccessful in her House bid, was elected in 2008 to the Ohio Democratic Party Central Committee and was re-elected this year. She represents one of the four wards in Hilliard.

This was her second bid for an Ohio Statehouse seat. Johnson lost to Ted Celeste in a 2006 primary race for the 24th House District.

“I had the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people and learned so much about our constituents,” Johnson said.

Johnson congratulated her opponent, but said she hopes Grossman received a message voters sent about their desire for improvement.

“I hope Mrs. Grossman sees the need for a different direction and approach of the district,” Johnson said.

The redrawn 23rd Ohio House District includes Grove City, the eastern section of Prairie Township, a small section of south Hilliard and parts of west Columbus.
