Program made veterans feel special

To the editor:

I would like to thank the staff and especially the eighth-grade students at Jones Middle School for the great luncheon they put on for veterans.

I have attended this event for the last three years and I can't say enough about how they make all attending veterans feel special on this day. They really go out of the their way to make this a remembered day.

I also read the Nov. 8 article by Pamela Willis, "Veterans honored with luncheon, musical performances," and thought it was a very nice article.

I would have liked to have had her mention the portion of the event where the VFW Post 1598 Patriot Pen Essay contest was covered. There were over 200 students who participated and 12 winners will go on to the district competition.

We have had a joint venture with Jones Middle School for a number of years and awarded $600 in prize money for the top three winners. All 12 winners will attend a banquet at the district competition and then state, and if chosen, to the national level with the top prize of a $10,000 savings bond.

The theme this year was "What I Would Tell Our Founding Fathers." The students put in a lot of time and research in their writings and it is a very thin line in picking the winners because they all are good and all are different. It gives the youth of today an opportunity to express their views and be heard on various issues.

We at VFW Post 1598 are very proud of the essay contest and it is a national event put on every year. So thank you again, Jones Middle School, for your wonderful event and I look forward to an invitation again next year.
