To the Editor:

It was with great pleasure I read of the restoration of Olentangy River Road to scenic byway status ("Volunteers refuse to say 'bye' to scenic byway," ThisWeek Delaware News, April 21).

I applaud the efforts of the citizens group that rallied to this cause. I originally moved to Powell in 1988, and now live in Orange Township, so it is always with great pride and appreciation that I drive Olentangy River Road and enjoy its beauty. "Scenic byway" never seemed an arbitrary and frivolous identification, but a recognition of one of our community's greatest assets, with its natural beauty and appeal.

While the area in general has endured both residential and commercial expansion of a tremendous nature, Olentangy River Road serves as a kind of heartline through the middle of our community that needs to be protected and strengthened. I am puzzled that any citizen would not have recognized this simply from the obvious facts of its existence.

Thanks again to the Citizens for a Safe and Scenic Byway for their advocacy and its result, and the commitment to future work to maintain that status.
