Informed discussion better than 'negative rhetoric'

To the Editor:

I have been reading with keen interest information and opinions on both sides of Issue 52.

Facts presented by those for and against the issue have helped me reach informed conclusions about the causes and potential solutions to our school system's current budget shortfall. What has not been helpful is several recent letters to the editor containing negative rhetoric aimed at character assassination rather than a thoughtful analysis of what is being said.

We, the voting public, need insights about the nature of the system's current problems and ways to resolve those problems.

I urge both sides to focus on the merits of the proposals that are being debated.
