To the Editor:

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the student athletes of Jones and Hastings middle schools, their parents, and the Upper Arlington community for their outstanding support of our recent athletic fund drive.

Each fall, the student athletes of our two UA middle schools spend several hours one evening raising funds to support our athletic programs, driven and supervised by parent volunteers. On Sept. 24, approximately 600 students from Jones and Hastings participated in this year's fund drive and raised a record amount of money to support middle school athletics.

Funds raised from this year's drive will be utilized to support athletic program expenses in the 2014-15 academic year for budget items such as new equipment, replacement uniforms and paying officials. Thanks to the generosity of the Upper Arlington community, we have been able to provide about one-third of our athletic budgets each year from this fundraising drive.

We are very proud of the fact that over half of eligible seventh- and eighth-grade students at our two middle schools participate in athletics. Jones and Hastings have a combined 60 middle school teams participating in 14 sports. In Upper Arlington, there are more sports offered at the middle school level than at most Ohio high schools.

So thank you, Upper Arlington, for your generous support enabling this fine tradition of broad student participation in athletics to continue.
