To the Editor:

Congratulations to the players and coaches of the UAHS boys basketball team on a spectacular season that awakened a sense of community achievement, pride and excitement.

Few occasions would draw with equal enthusiasm classes of elementary school children, faces painted with UA logos, and at the same time, decades of UAHS graduates, digging through their wardrobes for the black and gold -- all of them jumping and screaming for the common cause of victory.

You accomplished not only this, but much more, regardless of the scoreboard after the final horn. You showed us that you are real winners in the game of life.

Winners are characterized by repetition, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship. Winners get things done when those around them don't, especially when those around them say, "you can't."

Winners submit to authority, buy into the program and put the team first. Winners have the drive and ability to do it more and do it better. Winners are not intimidated by their surroundings but rise to the occasion. Winners don't wait for someone to show them what to do, they lead by example.

Winners don't get down when things turn against them. They take a deep breath, remember their training and hard work, and get back at it until the job is done right and done well. Last, winners never, never quit.

By this measure of a winner -- the true and only measure -- you have all shown yourselves to be fantastic winners. Be proud of yourselves. I assure you, we are all very proud of you. You are a credit to yourselves and our community.

Many rewards await you, based upon the lessons you've learned and the character you've developed.

This world belongs to winners. You have demonstrated yourselves to be among them. Well done.
