Nearly everything fell into place last Saturday at Whetstone as the Bexley High School boys track and field team earned a Division II district runner-up finish for the second time in three years.

The Lions scored 101 points in district 1, finishing just behind River Valley (109).

"With each race, you see your teammates doing well and you want to build on what they've done," said Matt Cavallaro, who was second in the 1,600 meter (4 minutes, 37.05 seconds) behind Caledonia River Valley's Zach Lathrop (4:33.99), third in the 3,200 (10:16.37) and joined Ethan Barr, Matt Sharpe and Colin Zidar in winning the 3,200 relay (8:16.52).

"We're all starting to peak right now. (At district) you have to forget about the times. You need to chase after the guys and get the lead."

The top four in each event advanced to the regional today and Saturday at Lexington, with the top four there qualifying to state June 6-7 at Ohio State.

Brian Farlough won the 100 (11.33) and 200 (23.08) and joined Sharpe, Zidar and Gus Martin in the winning 1,600 relay (3:27.4). He also was second in the 400 (50.14).

Last year, Farlough joined graduates J.D. Ramage, Chip Reeves and Elliot Bromagen to take 13th in the 800 relay (1:31.62) at state.

"When you're doing three or four events, you have to get that mental thing together," Farlough said. "I know what it takes to get (to state). Last year I didn't go for some individual events. This year, I'm not going to let that chance pass me by."

Farlough has the fifth-fastest time in the 100 and sixth-fastest time in the 200 entering the regional. The 3,200 relay is seeded second behind Sandusky Perkins (8:16.4) and the 1,600 relay is seventh.

•The girls team finished seventh (47) in Division II district 2 behind champion Hartley (118).

Bea Weiland, Katie Wren, Sarah Cavallaro and Hallie Pryor were fourth in the 3,200 relay (10:43.89) and Weiland, Ida Adugna, Sarah Cavallaro and Abby Fagin were third in the 1,600 relay (4:16.0). The top four in each event advanced to the regional today and Saturday at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, with the top four there qualifying to state.

"We were ready to run," Weiland said. "In other meets, you just try to do the best that you can. But here, there's definitely more competition and you have to run smart. You have to know the other team and what their strengths are and what you can do against them."

The 400 relay of Elaine McMillan, Adugna, Ellen Cavallaro and Altheria Siler was third (52.24) and Megan Leite was fourth in the discus (100 feet, 2 inches).

"We talked a little bit to the athletes that times don't matter here. You need to be in the top eight to score and the top four to move on to regional," coach Eric Acton said.

"You don't have to sell out to be first, but you have to work to get into the top four if you want to stay alive for another week. The seniors are acutely aware of that."

Siler was fifth in the 100 (13.43) and 200 (27.39) and joined Adugna, Allison Ezzo and Katie Sarvas on the fifth-place 800 relay (1:52.46). Fagin was fifth in the 400 (1:02.81) and Sarvas was fifth in the shot put (31-10).
