Billy Thompson doesn't take lightly the building process that he's been a part of since taking over as director of coaching and player development for the Worthington United Soccer Club eight years ago.

It took the program six years before its U12 boys team won a State Cup in 2006.

In the State Cup tournament May 17 at Beavercreek, the program -- now called the Worthington Crew Juniors -- added significantly to that number.

The club's U13 and U17 boys were two of the eight central Ohio champions for boys and girls from ages U11 through U18.

"We've just had tremendous growth the last eight years as a program," Thompson said. "With the number of quality teams we have at all levels, we've really established ourselves as a strong program."

Each State Cup champion qualified for the US Youth Midwest Regional Championships, which is June 20-25 in Rockford, Ill.

Six area boys teams won State Cups, and girls teams capturing titles included the Eagles SC U15 team and the Ohio Premier U12 Green.

Thompson coaches the Worthington Crew Juniors U17 boys team, which beat Team Ohio Green 3-2 in the championship of its age bracket.

Billy Halsey, a Watterson High School junior who was honorable mention ThisWeek Super 12 last fall, is the captain. Paul Hendricks, who was the starting goalkeeper for Worthington Kilbourne's Division I district championship team last fall, and two of his teammates, Dan Colegrove and Chase Wright, also are key players.

Several of the players on the team began playing for Thompson when they were at the U-10 level.

The U-13 team is coached by Simon Davis.

"We hadn't won (a State Cup) before and we all just wanted it," Hendricks said. "(My defense) made it pretty easy for me."

"As a growing program, it's just nice that we're committed to getting better every year," Thompson said. "It's nice to have growth not only in numbers but that we're consistently getting more competitive."

The Team Ohio F.C. also left with two State Cups. Its U16 boys team, which is coached by Gerry D'Arcy, won a U15 Cup a year ago as well and features Olentangy's Aaron Horton, who played for the U.S. national team last fall. Dublin Jerome sophomore Jeff Addis is another key player.

The program's U11 team is coached by John Lawrence.

Team Ohio F.C. also had its U12 and U13 boys teams finish as state runners-up.

"We won two State Cups and had three teams that came really close," Team Ohio F.C. director Steve Dawson said. "The State Cup is a bit of a crapshoot. The U16 team will be one of the favorites at the regional. They lost their first game (at the regional) last year but they didn't have Aaron Horton for that game because he was at a camp."

The Blast FC program had its U14 Red team and its U15 NCAA Red teams capture titles and had runners-up in U17 boys and U14 girls.

Mike Lawrence coaches the U15 team and Lesh Shkreli heads the U14 squad.

It was the fourth State Cup in five years for the team Mike Lawrence coaches. Key players include Big Walnut's Joe Craig and A.J. Fleak, Hilliard Davidson's Tyler Shaner and Hartley's Chris Davis.

The team beat COSA Express 3-1 in the final, with Lawrence crediting his defense of Kyle Culbertson (Olentangy Liberty), Walter Ford (Liberty) and Sage Gardner (Kilbourne) for leading the way.

"Our strength has been our defense, and we've done pretty well defensively all year," Mike Lawrence said. "Defense was kind of our weakness last year when we didn't (win a State Cup at U14). We've got probably about six kids that haven't won (a State Cup) before this one. Our team chemistry is pretty good."
