Bexley High School's speech and debate team is currently in the thick of its 2011-12 season, having traveled over last weekend to Mentor for an Ohio High School Speech League tournament.

The league is a nonprofit organization of public and private high schools in Ohio that field competitive forensic programs. The types of competition sponsored include policy/public forum debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, oral interpretation, prose/poetry, and impromptu speaking.

Bexley club adviser David O'Reilly, a social studies teacher at the high school, says his team is young but very accomplished and is likely to be competitive this year. Senior Maggie Flanigan and freshman, Peter Heft have already qualified for the state tournament in policy. According to O'Reilly the two students spent time over last summer honing their skills at speech and debate camps.

Volunteer coaches Brett Baldwin, Heather Harper, Stevan Jechura, Matt Kohler and David Wickenheiser are also working with the speech and debate team.

The BHS team competes at Stow High School in Northeastern Ohio on Dec. 16-17, Sylvania Northview High School Jan. 13-14, and at Wooster High School Jan. 20-21.
