Bexley students raise $1,100 for Charity Newsies fund
Bexley City School District students raised more than $1,100 this year for Charity Newsies, the Columbus nonprofit dedicated to clothing local K-12 school children in need.
This was Bexley City Schools’ 65th year of working to raise money for the organization.
“Our school district staff members create terrific opportunities for our Bexley students to have the meaningful educational experiences that come from helping others, such as through the Charity Newsies organization,” Superintendent Mike Johnson said. “They and our industrious, energetic and generous students are a tribute to the community.”
Bexley High School and Middle School, along with Cassingham Elementary held fundraising activities that included the “Turkey Tug” between faculty and students and a “Stache-for-Cash” event, encouraging male students to grow facial hair in return for contributions.
Students presented a check to the organization at an assembly Nov. 22 and were then recognized Dec. 8 at the Charity Newsies Gala and Auction.
“It’s great to see local children helping other local children,” said Mike McGarity, Charity Newsies drive chairman. “Thanks to the incredible support from the community, such as Bexley City Schools, we were able to surpass our goals for giving in the 2011 drive season.”
With the help of generous donations and community support, Charity Newsies raised more than $880,000 through this year’s annual gala, auction and paper sale.
Every year for more than 100 years, Charity Newsies volunteers take to the streets of Franklin County in December to sell special edition newspapers, of which 100% of the proceeds go to buy brand new clothing for Franklin County school children in need. Last school year, Charity Newsies clothed more than 14,800 kids and this year they anticipate clothing more than 15,000. For more information, visit www.charitynewsies.org.
