Bexley Mayor John Brennan, 65, died Monday afternoon following an 11-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Brennan, an easy winner in the Nov. 8 election with 67 percent of the vote, was less than one month into his second term in office.

He also served on Bexley City Council, was a former city council president and served as parks and recreation director for the cities of Bexley, Dublin and Hilliard.

He was elected to the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association Hall of Fame in 2011.

Brennan announced in February 2011 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He enrolled in an aggressive treatment program at the Ohio State University's Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and remained in office until Jan. 12, when he took a leave of absence and city council president Ben Kessler was named acting mayor.
