This year, a critical date for the Bexley school community has changed.

Students starting kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1 of the year that they intend to enroll in kindergarten.

Formerly, students had to be five on or before Sept. 30 in order to start school that fall.

Kindergarten registration for fall 2012 is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, April 3 and 4, at each of Bexley's elementary schools.

The board of education approved the change in Bexley's entrance age, effective in the 2012-13 school year, at an April 2011 meeting.

"The board of education made a good decision in changing this policy, because sometimes those summer babies struggle throughout their academic careers," said Superintendent Mike Johnson.

The entrance date change is the latest among several enhancements to Bexley's kindergarten program. The school district began offering all-day kindergarten in fall 2010.

This past fall, kindergarten teachers implemented a staggered start schedule for the beginning of the school year. Teachers welcomed seven or eight students each day for the first three days of school, giving students a smooth transition to the start of the year.
