Bexley council to discuss naming a new mayor
Bexley City Council members will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6 in city council chambers, 2242 E. Main St., to discuss the election of a new mayor.
City Council President Ben Kessler has been serving as acting mayor since John Brennan took a leave of absence for health reasons Jan. 12. Brennan died Jan. 30.
According to the Bexley City Charter, city council members will now elect a new mayor, who will serve for two years. Bexley voters then will elect a mayor who will serve another two-year term. At the end of that term, the regular four-year election cycle will resume.
If a sitting council member is named mayor Monday night, council will also have to fill the vacant council seat.
Bexley City Hall will close at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, and will remain closed on Friday, Feb. 3, in honor of the mayor and to allow city employees an opportunity to attend calling hours and Mayor Brennan's funeral. Normal operating hours for Bexley City Hall will resume on Monday, Feb.6.
