The start of the school year is around the corner, but teacher in-service days and holidays don't have to leave parents struggling for childcare and children longing for something to do.

Bexley's Recreation and Parks Department is accepting reservations for its Schools Off, Camp's On program.

In its second year, SOCO offers programming for children age kindergarten through sixth grade on days when school is out for holidays or other reasons such as parent teacher conferences.

The program will also run during Bexley schools' winter and spring breaks.

"Working parents generally still need to work," said Mike Price, director of the recreation and parks department. "This helps provide childcare for parents and it's also something kids to do instead of being stuck at home."

The majority of SOCO camps will be held at Maryland and Cassingham elementary schools, but some will be at other sites, including the Jeffrey Mansion.

The Schools Off, Camp's On program is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and parents can drop off and pick up children at anytime within those hours. A snack is provided, although parents are asked to pack their child's lunch.

"We want to make sure we give parents a lot of flexibility," Price said.

The SOCO program is structured much like a summer camp, Price said, with a range of activities including sports, art and games, being offered each day.

"We try to give the kids a lot of choices. We give them the opportunity for the freedom to decide what they want to do," Price said. "We've had a really good response and we're excited to expand on it this year. There's a definite need in the community."

Registration for SOCO can be completed online or in person at the recreation and parks department, 165 N. Parkview Ave. The cost ranges depending on how many sessions a child attends, but starts at $35 per day.
