Students, parents and community members in Bexley looking to attend an athletic event this year will find it easier to locate times, venues, and communicate with coaches, district officials say.

After mounting complaints last year, Bexley City School District officials -- in conjunction with the Bexley athletic boosters -- cleaned up the website making it easier to read schedules, communicate with coaches, and link to the district webpage, the biggest points of contention.

Debate continued earlier this month among school board members, though, about how cancellations are communicated to students, parents and the community. It is currently not the district's responsibility to communicate those cancellations.

Marlee Snowdon, vice president of the Bexley school board said that relying on parents and community members to use a hotline to learn about cancellations just isn't sufficient.

Other board members suggested using texts to alert players and families, adding cancellations to existing calendars, or using a highlighted button on the district's website in order to alert everyone.

Coming up with a solution might cost the district additional dollars, said Superintendent Michael Johnson.

But board members indicated they may be willing to shell out the extra dough to come up with a solution to the communication problem.

Board President Carol Fey asked Johnson that he come back to the panel with a possible solution and proposed cost.

When visitors enter the district's website and click on the athletics icon at the top of the page, they can click on "Sport-by-Sport Info" at the left-hand side of the page where they will be redirected to bexleylions.org, the booster's athletic website.

There, visitors will find each of the district's sports categorized into seasons, then listed by icon. For example, fall sports are listed first, including boys golf, boys soccer, cross country, field hockey, football, girls golf, girls soccer, girls tennis, volleyball and cheerleading. Each sports is highlighted with an icon which can be clicked to view information about that sport.

Next to the icons are lists of coaches and schedules for each grade level applicable. By clicking on a schedule, a listing pops up beginning with the current date. By clicking on a coach's name, an e-mail will open to communicate with the coaching staff.

Currently, at the bottom of the Bexley Lions athletic page, there is a box to inform visitors about the sports hotline and reads: "The Athletic Sportsline has been established to provide Bexley parents and fans with round-the-clock information on events in the Bexley sports arena. Each day events are available after 10 a.m. Updates and/or cancellations due to weather conditions, etc. are made after 2 p.m."

If weather appears to threaten a game, the site tells visitors to "wait till later in the day to call. The most up-to-the minute schedules can be found by visiting the online schedules."

The site also contains other information about athletic ticket prices, NCAA eligibility, school spirit news, fundraising information, department personnel, volunteer information, athletic forms and policies, and key points of contacts.
