* Amelia Brownstein, a Bexley High School senior, earned first runner-up status at the statewide Poetry Out Loud competition held at Ohio Dominican University.

Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide recitation contest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. As part of the statewide event, Brownstein recited Kubla Kahn by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Degrees of Gray in Philipsburg by Richard Hugo and Golden Retrievals by Mark Doty.

* Spencer Brooks, an eighth-grader at Bexley Middle School, tied for fourth place in the 2013 Scripps College of Communication Columbus Metro Spelling Bee held recently at Ohio University in Athens.

* Bexley High School junior Simon Horn was selected to perform with the National Senior High School Honor Choir at this month's national conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Dallas. BHS Choral Director Amy Blosser also was scheduled to attend, serving as the association's national chairperson for repertoire and standards.
