Singing groups plan first combined concert in 20 years

By

For the first time in the new century, the United German Singing Society of Central Ohio is holding a concert.

Members of the Germania Singing and Sport Society, Newark Maennerchor, Columbus Maennerchor, Mendelssohn Liedertafel and Columbus Swiss Club will perform Saturday, June 8, in Mees Hall at Capital University, 2199 E. Main St. in Bexley.

The show starts at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased by calling the CAPA ticket office, 614-469-0939, or online at ticketmaster.com.

Everything from classical opera to Swiss yodeling songs to traditional and modern folk songs will be part of the show, said Kathleen Megown, a singer in various groups who also is handling publicity for the show.

The audience also will be invited to participate in some numbers, she said.

"It is unique in that the music of Germany and Switzerland is quite varied," Megown said. "It's not just one kind of song. People might think it's just polka music."

The concerts date back about 30 years and were held about once a year through the 1980s, said Dave Rathburn, a singer and past vice president of the Columbus Maennerchor and president of the Helvetia men's singing group at the Swiss Club.

But as interest waned and funds dwindled, staging shows became less of a concern, Rathburn said. The last one was held more than 20 years ago.

"I'm really excited about the tradition coming back," Rathburn said. "I was really sad when he had to start postponing them."

Megown said the concert looks to rekindle some of the enthusiasm the various local groups enjoyed in the 20th century.

"They aren't as strong as they used to be," she said. "One of the reasons we're having this concert is that it's fun to sing with people and, hopefully, young people would like to join."

Performances by the Germania Folk Dancers, Columbus Kinderchor and Swiss Alpine Horns will round out the show.

Schmeckfest is June 16

The fourth annual Schmeckfest, an endless buffet of German food, will be held 1 to 3 p.m. June 16 at the Germania Singing and Sport Society Clubhouse, 543 S. Front St.

The feast, a fundraiser for Germania, will offer a smorgasbord of classic homemade dishes, including rouladen, sauerbraten, cabbage rolls, schnitzel, spaetzle, potato pancakes and a variety of desserts.

The event also will have an open bar with several German and domestic beers on tap.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. They can be purchased by calling the club at 614-228-9055.

Children 4 years old and younger will be admitted for free.
